Mountaineering, a sport with a rich history, has evolved into rock-craft, snow-craft, and skiing specializations. The term ‘alpinism ‘, which refers to climbing routes with minimal equipment in high, snow and ice-covered mountains, was coined in the 19th century to distinguish climbing as a sport or recreation from hunting or religious pilgrimage. The UIAA, the world governing body for mountaineering and climbing, addresses access, medical, mountain protection, safety, youth, and ice climbing issues. Historically, mountains have been considered sacred due to their proximity to heaven. The first confirmed ascent of Sněžka in Europe was in 1456. The first recorded climb of any technical difficulty was in 1492 by Antoine de Ville. During the Enlightenment, many mountain summits were surmounted for the first time due to curiosity for the natural world, marking a significant shift in human exploration and understanding of the natural world.
