Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in Uganda’s southwestern part, on the rim of the Rift Valley. The park dates back over 25,000 years and is home to over 300 mountain gorillas, approximately half of the world’s population. The forest is home to 346 bird species, over 200 butterfly species, and 324 tree species, with ten unique to Uganda. The park is known for its darkness and offers limited time and permits for visitors.
The forest also houses 120 mammals, including baboons, chimpanzees, elephants, and antelopes. It supports 350 bird species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics. The nearby towns of Nkuringo and Buhoma offer luxury lodges, budget campsites, restaurants, rustic bandas, craft stalls, and guiding services. A 3-day gorilla safari tour provides opportunities to explore the neighboring Bakiga and Batwa Pygmy people’s cultures, showcased in performances, workshops, and village walks.
In addition to visiting the mountain gorillas, tourists can visit other African destinations, such as Rwanda, Kenya, and Mount Kilimanjaro. Bwindi can be very cold, with annual mean temperatures ranging from 7°C to 20°C. Due to the region’s harsh climate, warm clothing and wet weather gear are required.
African safari holidays often combine visits to neighboring countries, such as Tanzania, Kenya, and Madagascar.
